South Pole, Antarctica, 2001

Nearly a year at the bottom of the world

In January 2001, I left for the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, where I spent nearly a year. I was there as part of a research project called SPARCLE, studying clouds and radiation at the South Pole. During the Antarctic summer, the station had about 220 people; when the last plane left in February, 50 of us remained for the winter, completely isolated until late October.
